Hip

The normal joint has a smooth articular surface that maintains a good function of the joint for the whole life. The hip joint can be damaged by osteoarthritis, necrosis, fractures or inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid. These diseases may lead to irregularity of the smooth surface and progressive wear of the cartilage and loss of bone. Patients may suffer from pain, stiffness, deformity or shortening as well as limitations of normal function like walking, bending or lifting the leg. In mild cases of arthritis, patients could be treated by medications, physio, weight reduction and using a cane. However, surgery will be necessary in severe cases of arthritis. The standard surgical treatment is hip replacement.
